Greater Boston Flute Association to host performance by Alberto Almarza

—Accomplished flutist to appear May 14 in Woburn, MA

Woburn, MA – Monday, April 25, 2005 — GBFA, a nonprofit organization devoted to supporting the greater Boston flute community, today announced that it will host a lecture and concert performance by noted flutist Alberto Almarza. The event, entitled “Native Flutes and Extended Techniques,” will include a performance, lecture and demonstration exploring the relationship between traditional flutes and the music of today.

Almarza, on faculty with Jeanne Baxstresser at Carnegie-Mellon University, has been described as a virtuoso flutist by the Boston Globe. “Alberto brings a unique and passionate approach to music,” said Elizabeth Watson, the organization’s president.

Sponsored in part by the Brannen-Cooper Fund, the Saturday May 14th event will take place at the Brannen Brothers Flutemakers Recital Hall, 58 Dragon Court, Woburn, MA 01801. Admission for non-GBFA members is $10. The event is free to GBFA members. Seats may be reserved by clicking on GBFA’s Important UPdates link at www.gbfa.org  (direct address http://users.rcn.com/copywriter/gbfa) or by calling 781-937-0389.

GBFA advises that seating is limited and that all seats must be reserved. The hour-long lecture/demonstration will begin at 11 AM. There will be a lunch break, with the concert performance following at 1 PM.

Almarza’s versatility and musicianship have led him to perform and record some of the most adventurous and challenging pieces from the music of today as well as works from the standard repertoire and Baroque literature on period instruments. In addition to teaching at Carnegie Mellon, Mr. Almarza is also a resident artist and member of the faculty at The Jeanne Baxtresser International Master Class at the Juilliard School in New York and was recently appointed to the National Flute Association Advisory Board for New Music.
